LONDON DESIGN BIENNALE
Face Values was the US Pavilion for the 2018 London Design Biennale. The installation consisted of a collaborative process between the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, digital artists Zachary Leiberman and R. Luke DuBois, and exhibition design firm Matter Architecture Practice. The pavilion intended to shed light on the dialogue between humans and machine through live facial data and graphic images.
Our role was to facilitate the conversation between both artists' interpretations of facial recognition technology typically used for security, surveillance, and behavioral profiling. The irregularity and sporadic nature of the reeds symbolizes the complicated web of networking involved in the use of facial recognition software and the influx of data collected by the software. The entire structure was fabricated and preassembled in Brooklyn before we shipped it to London where it was installed for the three week long event.
The pavilion won a medal for its clarity in portraying the overall theme of the biennial for that year and was recently brought back to the Cooper Hewitt where we again installed it in one of their galleries.
